Sir Adrian Boult studied under Arthur Nikisch in Berlin, which certainly contributed to his outstanding interpretations of Brahms’s works. Similarly his friendship with Sir Edward Elgar ensured his interpretations of the composer were unquestionably authoritative. The Proms performance of Brahms’ Symphony No.3 from 1977 is in superb stereo, representing Boult in his ‘golden years’. Martin Cotton, in his booklet essay, notes that the 1976 Proms stereo recording of Elgar’s Symphony No.1- ‘is completely astonishing’, Boult giving arguably his greatest performance of the work. These recordings have never been issued before and the CD represents stunning value at more than 81 minutes long.
