Rudolf Barshai is one of the great Russian musicians of the twentieth century. Both as a viola player and conductor he worked with renowned figures such as Dmitri Shostakovich, Sviatoslav Richter, David Oistrakh, Mstislav Rostropovich, Leonid Kogan and Emil Gilels, and several composers wrote especially for his acclaimed ensemble, the Moscow Chamber Orchestra. After emigrating to the West, Rudolf Barshai became principal and guest conductor of many orchestras around the world.
